Adult Manufacturers Showing Their Charitable Sides
When Ash & I began initially discussing opening Silver Stars, one of the first things that we talked about was how we wanted to give back to the community and be involved in various local charities. We discussed both organizations that we were interested in and charities that reach out specifically to women as well, since we are a very women-focused business.
Well, we are very pleased that apparently this is all part of a bigger trend that has been taking hold in adult businesses. Recently quite a few of the major adult novelty manufacturers and distributors have been reaching out to charities and non-profits. From breast cancer support to battered women’s shelters, novelty manufacturers are doing more and more to support good causes, especially in the non-profits that are directed at women. And not just in a cheesy ‘We’ve got a pink ribbon on our website’ kinda’ way.
For instance, toy manufacturer Topco, is very involved in fundraisers for the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation, the American Fertility Association and Children in Need. Here’s a quote from their Director of Marketing:
“Rather than using a charity as a tool to increase a product’s sales by slapping a pink or red package on it, we favor directly supporting charitable fundraising events with product donations and sponsorships that will equal real money for the cause,” she explains. “We understand that true philanthropy means it is more about the cause than about us.”
Others are getting involved by creating products and giving portions of the sales of those products to charities. One of those products, which we hope to be getting in soon, is called the Papillon from Cal Exotics. A portion of each vibrator purchased is donated by them to Living Beyond Breast Cancer.
Another company heavily involved via their products is condom case manufacturer Just In Case, which provides us with our Just In Case Condom Compact. In February they donated products to the global V-Day movement to stop violence against women and girls. A month earlier, the manufacturer asked the public to nominate local charities so that it could spread the love.
As for us here at Silver Stars, we’re both very involved in working with the Humane Society here in Gainesville (we’re suckers for cute and furry critters). We are also big supporters of the Gateway House, which is a local battered women’s shelter. We’re going to be running a couple of promotions soon. As soon as we have the details about that, we’ll let you know.
Hopefully this is a trend that will continue to spread. All of this helps to improve the reputation of adult businesses everywhere and it sets a very good example that hopefully many other businesses will follow.
